Referencing value in a closed Excel workbook using INDIRECT?
In the formula, E:\Excel file\ is the full file path of the unopened workbook, test.xlsx is the name of the workbook, Sheet2 is the sheet name which contains the cell value you need to reference from, and A:A,2,1 means the cell A2 will be referenced in the closed workbook. You can change them based on your needs.

Creating a chart in Excel that ignores #N/A or blank cells
I believe that excel ignores blanks by default (see 'Hidden and empty cells' submenu under 'Select Data Source'). As for the #N/A, can you just make your chart from a derived column, where you use IFERROR to change #N/A cells to blank?

Needing to view Unix time in Excel I too found it simpler to excise the nanosecond values from the time string. I also used a custom format for the resulting cells to display the data in the manner I wanted.
